FX･Goodies: This document contains a basic overview of the files in the ﾒFX･Goodiesﾓ folder for use with the File eXpress suite of tools.

Overview

The File eXpress suite includes a control panel and two applications designed to provide document transfer services over AppleTalk and TCP/IP networks.  Together, the fully recordable and scriptable FX･Engine and FX･Packager bring point-to-point document transfer and compression services to your desktop.  In brief, you can use File eXpress to send any file on your Macintosh to any other machine running File eXpress just by ﾒdroppingﾓ the item to send on the FX･Packagerﾕs mailbox icon.  File eXpress also creates a single ﾒFX･InBoxﾓ folder on your desktop where youﾕll be able to quickly access items sent to you by other File eXpress users.  You can find the File eXpress suite for downloading on your favorite on-line service or archive.

The ﾒFX･Goodiesﾓ folder contains a copy of the File eXpress User Manual and some cool examples of how one might use File eXpress to extend their own tools.  Even though the examples are small and provide only a limited set of functionality, we hope they demonstrate the underlying power File eXpress brings to your desktop.


Specifically, the ﾒFX･Goodiesﾓ folder contains:

1)    FX･Mailer - A HyperCard Stack that uses File eXpress to provide basic e-mail services.  Be sure to take a look at the scripts for ideas on how you can use File eXpress with your own projects.  Requires HyperCard 2.2 or greater with AppleScript support, but runs best with HyperCard 2.3.

2)    Auto-Send to <Target> Droplet - An AppleScript Droplet that will use the FX･Engine to send any file dropped on it to <Target>.  Duplicate and customize to create direct links to your favorite destinations.  Requires AppleScript 1.1.

3)    FX･ScriptingSample - Demonstrates scripting the FX･Packager and FX･Engine. Requires AppleScript 1.1 and Finder Scripting extensions.

4)    FX･Manual 1.2v0 - A PDF version of the complete File eXpress User's Manual.

5) FX･Extractor - A utility to extract individual or groups of items from a Package file.  Used by folks who create large packages for backup purposes, but only want to retreive a few files at a time.

6) Run FX･Engine and Stop FX･Engine - These two very short AppleScript programs allow you to start and stop the FX･Engine without using the FX･Control panel.

NOTES FOR FX･MAILER USERS:

If you're continually being asked to "locate" the FX･Engine, FX･Packager or HyperCard while using the FX･Mailer stack, you may need to recompile the AppleScript scripts in the FX･Mailer Stack.  To display the AppleScript scripts (which have been placed in buttons), hold down the "option" key and click on the "FX" label in the upper left corner of the current window.  Note, both the Reader and Compose cards contain AppleScript scripts in buttons that may have to be recompiled so be sure to "option-click" on the "FX" label in both windows.  Display and Save the scripts that are attached to each of the AppleScript based buttons.  Once you've recompiled the scripts, AppleScript will no longer ask you to locate the engine or packager.  You may re-hide the AppleScript buttons by "option-clicking" on the "FX" labels.

NOTES FOR FX･SAMPLESCRIPT USERS:

If you're using an unregistered copy of File eXpress, make sure you have opened the FX･Packager at least once since your last reboot before running the FX･SampleScript script.  This script will fail if it has to dismiss the Registration Dialog that appears once after each reboot.
